Indian President, Photograph signed: “Neelam Sanjiva Reddy”. Black and White Photo.. Inspired by a 1929 visit by Mahatma Gandhi to his home village, Neelam Sanjiva Reddy (1913-1996) adopted Gandhi’s simple dress and soon there after joined the independence movement, the Indian National Congress. After independence, Neelam Sanjiva Reddy rose quickly in the Congress Party, first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1952 and serving two terms as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh (1956, 1962-1964). He was Secretary General of the Non-Aligned Movement in 1963. Breaking with Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Sanjiva Reddy was re-elected the Lok Sabha as a candidate of the Janata Party in 1975. When Mrs. Gandhi’s State of Emergency (1975-1977) ended, her Congress Party was swept from power, and Reddy became Speaker of the Lok Sabha, In 1979, he was elected President of India (1977-1982), to date the only unopposed Presidential candidate.
